Derbyshire County Show

The 137th Derbyshire County Show took place at the end of June in the distinguished and picturesque surroundings of Locko Park, near Spondon

Organisers Derbyshire Agricultural and Horticultural Society and an army of volunteers had made a fantastic job of setting up the showground, which included all the best elements of a traditional country show. The WI, floral art and craft marquees provided impressive displays and there was an opportunity to learn about beekeeping from the Derbyshire Beekeepers Association in a special bee marquee. A splendid defensive circle of vintage tractors was offset by a cavalcade of immaculately presented cars lined up before the Hall. Children enthusiastically entered into the fun of the nostalgic fairground attractions – and there were even pony rides. Livestock, showjumping, dog and rabbit shows offered entertaining viewing and friendly competition, while in the main ring there were exciting scurry driving displays and J C Balls & Sons of Ambergate drew the crowds with its Digger Dance. Local food and drink producers ensured that no-one went hungry or thirsty, while a wonderful variety of excellent trade stands meant there was little likelihood of returning home without something delightful as a reminder of a great day out. Chairman Edward Hicklin said, ‘After the disappointment of having to cancel the 2016 event, it was a delight for the Society to welcome so many people back to the County Show. We consider the venue to be a great success and are confident that the future of the Show is looking much better! A big thank you to everyone who came and took part in any way whatsoever, large or small.’
