Gloomy end of January weather was considerably brightened by Derby Universitys awards ceremonies this year captured for the people of Derby to enjoy on the Big Screen in the Market Place. More new technology was available on a special TV screen at the Kedleston Road site, where the tweets and photos of the 2,000 plus graduates were relayed for all to see.

The highlight of the universitys academic year, the ceremonies also recognised six high achievers who received honorary awards: Neil McKay, the BAFTA award-winning drama-writer; influential photographer and teacher Professor Paul Hill; Dr David Livesey, an accomplished University adminstrator; Arthur Keily, the veteran Derbyshire marathon runner and author; Major General Garry Robison, the Royal Marines most senior serving officer; and Bob Laxton, MP for Derby North until he stood down in 2010.

The traditional march to the Cathedrals service of thanksgiving was enlivened by the Oriole Marching Jazz Band and the Heage Brass Band.

The events surrounding the annual graduation celebrations always give a huge boost to the county, drawing in thousands of visitors. With its highly successful Snowball at the climax of the celebrations, the graduation of the class of 2010 not only recognised some great achievements but also provided fun and financial benefits. www.derby.ac.uk
