S. Anselm’s is a co-educational preparatory school in a wonderful 18-acre Peak District setting offering full boarding alongside day children living locally.
Pre-prep children graduate seamlessly up to the main prep school able to build their future learning on a firm base. It is surrounded by open countryside yet possible to walk to Bakewell town centre within 5 minutes.
The school has consistently delivered an outstanding education for over 125 years with an enviable 100% pass rate at Common Entrance. Significant numbers of scholarships are won most years including to Oundle, Malvern, Shrewsbury, Uppingham, Repton and Eton. The most recent inspection remarked that the “pupils were excited by their learning” and that “they take great pride in their work”.
Building on its strong tradition the school is proud to announce the opening of S. Anselm’s College in September 2015 offering superb GCSE day school education to 13-16 year olds at a surprisingly affordable price.
S. Anselm’s has a newly refurbished library, a dedicated music block, art room, pottery kiln and 200 seat theatre with timetabled music, art and drama lessons for all children. Over 90% of the children learn an instrument. The superb learning support department ensures that all children’s strengths are valued and their potential reached.
The superlative sports facilities and enthusiastic staff ensure the children have a firm introduction to the main sports of rugby, football, hockey and cricket for the boys and hockey, netball and rounders for the girls. The school has a Team GB coach to teach swimming in its indoor 20m pool. There are 6 tennis courts in use in the summer, indoor and outdoor cricket nets and a newly refurbished sports hall. All children represent the school in team sports and enjoy the manifold benefits of being part of the team.
The Peak District setting means that the children can benefit from all the joys of running around outside; mountain biking and climbing often feature on the list of Sunday activities. Evenings can include yoga, debating or the hotly contested dodge ball. The dedicated boarding staff care for the children, and ensure they have lots of fun. Parents are welcomed into boarding life and many share the chapel service and Sunday supper with their children. This family atmosphere ensures a continuation of home values encouraging manners and courtesy.
Most importantly S. Anselm’s children are extraordinarily happy, exuding confidence and an awareness of those around them. Their manners and courtesy are often remarked upon by members of the public and were highlighted in the recent ISI report. They are helpful, kind and interested in others. When they go on to their senior school the heads often comment on what remarkable children come from S. Anselm’s.
