Stonell - Derby-based stone specialists

An ever-expanding selection of the finest architectural stone from around the world gives Derby-based specialists the edge ...

The ever-increasing enthusiasm for homes and interiors generally, and more specifically for sophisticated kitchens and bathrooms, has been good news for Stonell. Based in Derby in the newly regenerated Pride Park, and with six more state-of-the-art showrooms and a distribution centre in some of the most prestigious areas of the country, the business was founded in the city in 1999, when it was known as The Original Stone Company. In 2004 came a merger with a firm in Kent, and Stonell was born.

Its offices are smart and welcoming; its staff, including the knowledgable showroom manager Sue Hirst, equally so. Visitors are first shown to a huge showroom that offers an unparalleled range of over 200 stone products for walls, floors and exteriors with products across the financial range from easily affordable to the height of luxury. The list is endless: a wide range of limestone, marble and travertine, in both tile and vanity top form, slate, basalt and granite tiles, granite worktops, sandstone flagstones, and mosaics are all available from stock. A breathtaking selection of products is also available to order, high gloss or textured, patterned or plain, colourful or subtle, sourced from countries as diverse as China, Italy and Brazil, all carefully scrutinised to ensure they match Stonells stringent standards.

As well as tiles, worksurfaces and wall coverings Stonell provides Italian-designed solid stone baths, sinks and shower trays for the most luxurious bathrooms, shower rooms and wet rooms. The showroom is almost gallery-like, with tiles and wall coverings arranged in tempting displays, some accessorised with the contemporary bathroom fittings from VADO taps, shower heads and bathroom accessories that Stonell offers to complement its range of cutting edge stone. With such a wide variety of pattern, colour and texture, its easy to achieve a cohesive and stylish design in any room.

The choice would almost be too wide, were it not for Sues experience and gentle hand-holding to guide customers through the many stones and finishes on show. Theres a comprehensive and beautifully printed brochure to take home too, but first, the opportunity to discuss your requirements with Sue. Shell guide you through the process with ease and understanding of what is most suitable for each room. Home visits may be made too, to ensure that what looked fabulous in the showroom suits the style and purpose of its intended location in the house.

While Sue looks after private clients, local architects, interior designers, swimming pool designers, builders, developers and trade accounts are handled by Tim Hams. He liaises with builders and architects on major schemes, where quantities can be huge and the client prestigious. Some of Stonells previous work includes projects for Marks & Spencer, Jo Malone, David Lloyd, Austin Reed, Levi Strauss and Cambridge colleges as well as many award-winning properties, some of which have featured in Channel 4s Grand Designs.

As well as being used for interior work such as kitchens, bathrooms and hallways, stone is particularly practical and attractive when laid in conservatories, garden rooms and as pool surrounds, where the anti-slip property of natural stone is not only beautiful but safe where water is likely to be lying. Stone may be rustic or contemporary and reflects the changing seasons and even the time of day in its surface, enhancing any area.

Stonells team of experts are highly trained in every aspect of the trade, from its sales people to the traditional stonemasons, whose responsibility is to ensure that each piece of stone is perfectly shaped to any specification, whether a kitchen worktop, balustrade, drainer, bath surround or staircase. In fact, nothing is too large, too small, too simple or too complicated for the craftsmen at Stonell, as Sue will readily confirm. From a glitzy company reception area to a few tiles for a stylish splashback, each customer enjoys the same high levels of service and the promise of a top quality product.

One of the latest trends is for 3D wall cladding, although classic French creamy limestones are probably still the most popular. The company works throughout the world, from London to New York, the Seychelles, Dubai and the Caribbean. For both private and corporate clients, Stonell can work directly with the owner or through designers, architects and contractors, offering advice where its needed and ensuring that everything necessary to complete the job to everyones satisfaction is on site, on time.

Natural stone, whatever geological form it comes in, is beautiful, hardwearing and easy to look after. Once its installed it should need no further attention which is a shame, as it means therell be no more opportunity to visit Stonells amazing showroom and benefit from the wisdom and advice of the staff. Until the next time, of course beautiful stone can be addictive.
