Design @ 44 has an eclectic mix of work from the best local designer/makers. There is a huge range of gifts and fantastic design-led products from textiles, home ware and furniture to children’s items, fashion, jewellery and prints.

Design @ 44 offers something different to any other shop in Derbyshire. It showcases handmade products from over 35 local designers in the style of a mini department store.

The shop opened on Sadler Gate at the beginning of last October, when owners Dean and Jade decided to monitor its success up until Christmas. All 30 designers who displayed their products at the shop, including Dean and Jade, were blown away by not only the sales but the footfall, which was fantastic, and the customers simply said the shop had to stay open.

Design @ 44 re-opened three months later and since then the shop has gone from strength to strength.

As individuals, Dean and Jade run separate creative and design businesses.

Jade Devall Designs was started in 2011 after Jade completed a BA (HONS) Textile Design-Print at Birmingham University. As a designer and illustrator of a range of ceramic kitchenware, textiles and stationary, she works from her studio to create designs that are both innovative and beautiful.

Her ranges of illustrations are quirky and imaginative and are all about the simple things in life that make her happy. She continues to develop and design a fully functional range of kitchenware that is contemporary and modern. She introduces new collections every year, keeping her business fresh and desirable to the public. She showcases her work at shops and in shows across the UK, and her design work is quickly becoming an established, reputable brand.

Décor Engineered

As a structural engineer for most of his career, Dean has always been interested in the form and function of design. This combined with a love of both Danish and industrial styles, prompted him to start his own interior design business. He brings retro and industrial furniture to the modern day home by changing the colour, texture or usage of the piece. Furniture can change the surroundings of a room instantly and made-to-order colours and effects make his items unique. Alongside this, he creates bespoke pieces both for individuals and businesses.

All the design and construction is done in-house and all out-sourced work is from local suppliers. Dean has a large workshop and selling area at Design @ 44 and Décor Engineered is fast becoming a renowned destination for bespoke retro and industrial interiors for the home.

For Christmas, Design @ 44 is running a Christmas gift market in ‘The Space’ at the shop, which will run for four weeks leading up to Christmas. The market will give more designer/makers a chance to sell their items on some of the busiest shopping days of the year. Besides all of this, there will also be the chance to purchase gifts with extended opening hours and late night Christmas shopping evenings (dates to be confirmed).

As for the future, Design @ 44 is opening a second floor at the shop which will be solely furniture and interior-based.
