The awe-inspiring surroundings of Buxton’s iconic Devonshire Dome proved a fitting setting for the 12th annual Northern Design awards

Celebrating all that is great about design in the north of England, the evening recognised some of the region’s most innovative architects, designers and retailers, plus the impressive and inspiring buildings and interiors they create.

Built in the late 18th century by the 5th Duke of Devonshire, the Grade II listed building - which has the largest unsupported dome in Europe - was originally used as stabling accommodation and later became the Devonshire Royal Hospital. It was purchased by the University of Derby in 2001 and is now a campus for both the university and Buxton College.

Derbyshire Life was among the sponsors of this year’s awards and the judging panel included well-known faces and design professionals such as Wayne Hemingway MBE – who also hosted the evening - HRH Princess Katarina of Yugoslavia, George Bond and Linda Barker.

Following a drinks reception, guests enjoyed a dramatic performance from LED drummers Spark, followed by a four-course meal and an awards presentation.
