On a beautiful sunny Saturday in July the Derbyshire Childrens Holiday Centre held a sparkling wine reception, luncheon and an afternoons entertainment in aid of their Centre in Skegness. With the kind permission of John and Anne Thorpe the event took place within the garden and marquee at their home in Osmaston and was sponsored by Wilsons Pharmacies and North Midland Construction.
The 100 guests mingled in the garden to enjoy the reception, wine and sunshine prior to luncheon in the marquee. During the reception and the meal guests were discreetly entertained by the internationally renowned jazz group Spats Langhams Combination. Spats three afternoon sessions brought an eclectic range of acoustic musical entertainment with sounds from Paris to Buenos Aires.
The afternoons programme, interspersed between the music and dancing, featured an afternoon raffle and a prestigious auction where, amongst others, lots included an original oil of a seascape by Derby artist Andrew Macara; the use of a narrow boat; a beautiful silver necklace; a skiing lesson; learning to drive a train; fine dining in a top Derby restaurant; a flying lesson and a ladys pamper day. The impressive and skilled auctioneering of John Taylor ensured the incredible success of the auction. The event raised 5,018, which will provide 15 holidays for less fortunate children from Derbyshire at the Trusts Centre in Skegness.
