How to spend a family day out in this beautiful Derbyshire town
The world-famous Bakewell Pudding ensures that the beautiful Derbyshire town of Bakewell is known throughout the UK and beyond.
But whether you’re a Derbyshire native or from further afield, it would be a huge mistake to assume this picturesque Peak District location’s offering is limited to the famous old pudding.
Hugely popular, this market town has so much to offer and represents a fantastic day out for all the family.
Here are five things to see and do in and around Bakewell:
THE RIVER WYE
Running through the town, the beautiful River Wye is an attraction all in itself. Walk across the characterful bridges, observe the rainbow trout that appear from the crystal-clear waters, feed the ducks and take a stroll along the footpath that meanders into the town centre. Worth remembering too that many stunning walks can start, finish or pass through the town – the Monsal Trail being one of them.
All Saints Church
Its spire appears like a beacon above the Bakewell skyline. Dating way back to the 920AD, this magnificent Norman-style church is Grade II-listed and includes many old relics, monuments and carvings. Well worth a visit.
Bakewell isn’t renowned as a market town for no reason. In fact, a regular market has taken place in Bakewell for at least 700 years, with a charter having been granted in 1330. The award-winning market takes place on Mondays.
It’s worth taking the time to just explore Bakewell and the surrounding areas. If you do so, you will find fabulous old buildings, charming cottages, traditional pubs and independent shops and unique alleyways and walkthroughs. That’s before you even get to places on its doorstep such as Haddon Hall.
THE OLD ORIGINAL PUDDING SHOP
OK, we’ve established Bakewell isn’t all about the pudding, but when in Rome! This historic building dates from the 1800s and lies in the very heart of the town. With plenty of fresh produce (including the famous Bakewell pudding) as well as gifts, it’s a gem of a shop.
