County chairman Nancy Hawksworth welcomed over a thousand delegates and members to the Autumn Meeting of the Derbyshire Federation of Women's Institutes at Derby's Assembly Rooms.
County chairman Nancy Hawksworth welcomed over a thousand delegates and members to the Autumn Meeting of the Derbyshire Federation of Womens Institutes at Derbys Assembly Rooms. This was followed by a Civic Welcome from Mayor of Derby Cllr Sean Marshall. Members were reminded of future events, including County Quiz, trip to Oberammergau, County Show with new art competition, and a Swim the Channel event at Chatsworth in spring to raise money for a project at Valinkandapuram in India and funds for the WIs Denman College in Oxfordshire. The college is now open for members of the public to attend. Speakers included Barbara Harpham, National Director of Heart Research UK, WI Life columnist Martin Gurdon, and the main speaker for the day, Rachel Heyhoe-Flint OBE. A sports journalist and former captain of England ladies cricket and hockey teams, Rachel received a thunderous round of applause for her talk.
