Tregoning Contemporary Launch at Derby's Friar Gate Studios

The start of a new enterprise between Phil Tregoning, gallery owner and promoter of contemporary art in Derbyshire and successful artist and director of Buxton-based Hayloft Gallery, Lindsey Hambleton.

The start of a new enterprise between Phil Tregoning, gallery owner and promoter of contemporary art in Derbyshire for over 15 years, and successful artist and director of Buxton-based Hayloft Gallery, Lindsey Hambleton, was celebrated with a week-long exhibition at Derbys Friar Gate Studios.

Entitled Elemental, it began with a preview evening attended by many of the eight regional artists whose work was on show. This included a wealth of new paintings by Andrew Macara, including popular local snowscapes and works from his Reflections series. Kristian Baggaley unveiled dramatic new Derbyshire landscapes; Nick Hedderly and Chris Skripek exhibited strikingly individual urban scenes; and Lewis Noble showed a selection of his feted abstract landscapes. Sculptures included spatial marble pieces by Royal Society of Sculptors Award winner Louise Plant and quirky, idiosyncratic figures by Graham Ibbeson well known for his bronze statue of Eric Morecambe. New sculptor Marjan Wouda attracted a buzz of attention with her distinctive, tactile iron and bronze animal pieces.

Phil said of the new enterprise with Lindsey, We had a meeting of minds. I thought I had made my mind up to retire but my sister convinced me that instead I should embrace a fresh challenge. Tregoning Contemporary is an events-based business offering exciting and innovative ways in which to explore and purchase contemporary painting and sculpture. This includes promoting their prestigious roster of artists by hiring artwork to businesses. A major strand of new business also involves using web-based technology. Future events are being planned both at the Friar Gate Studios and other venues in Derbyshire.
