Around 2,000 graduates of the University of Derby took part in six award ceremonies held over two days at Derbys Assembly Rooms at the end of January. Spirits were not dampened by the wet weather and the occasion was celebrated in typical style with ceremonial splendour and joie de vivre. On alternate days the Oriole Marching Jazz Band and Heage Brass Band accompanied a procession led by University dignitaries from the Market Place to the Cathedral for a Thanksgiving Service. Graduates and guests were welcomed by Pro-Chancellor and Chair of the Governing Council, Dianne Jeffrey before the awards were conferred by the Chancellor, the Duke of Devonshire.

This year there were five recipients of an Honorary award: Christopher Charlton, conservation expert and distinguished former Director of the Arkwright Society; Ashbourne-born Peter Gadsby, one of the countys most successful entrepreneurs; documentary-maker and TV presenter Simon Groom; Roy McFarland, a world class footballer and one of Derby Countys best-loved players; and the founder of Slimming World, business woman Margaret Whitaker.
